Green Lane Clearance Day (Sotherington Lane near Butser Hill) From Patrick Manuel (NGLC Day Co-ordinator) Hi folks, I am pleased to inform you that we will be tackling the encroaching vegetation of the Byway Open to All Traffic (BOAT) East Meon 44 (OS Map References SU 689210 to SU 702191) otherwise known as Sotherington Lane. Running down the north side of the downs near Butser Hill, this should be a delightful lane as it affords great views out over the Hampshire countryside. The work will be conducted under Hampshire County Council’s Hampshire Paths Partnership (HPP) scheme and will be fully covered by the Council's insurance. The site has been surveyed and a risk assessment will be undertaken. Qualified first aiders will be in attendance and very keen to practice their skills – so please try to spoil their day by not giving them an opportunity! Tools, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and instruction will be provided but feel free to bring your own bow saws, loppers and the like. It is with continuing distress that I am obliged to remind you that the HCC insurance does not cover us to use motorised implements and that definitely includes chain saws (which we won’t be needing anyway). As usual, we will meet at 10:00 on site for the safety brief, tool talk and work day instructions. We will meet at the area at the east end of the section of South Downs that the lane joins (Map Reference SU 705191). There is parking space for a number of vehicles at this point but please be carful not to block field entrances. For those heading up from the Portsmouth direction we will meet at 09:30 at Morrison's at Horndean just off the A3(M) for a 09:45 sharp departure. Thanks in advance If you require any more information please contact Julian Mallard |
